Cotside
A free companion for NICU dads

For the dad standing by the incubator.

Nobody hands you a guide when your baby goes into neonatal care. This is the quiet one I wish I'd had. No sign-up, no cost, just plain words from someone who has stood where you're standing.

Written dad to dad Free, forever Nothing leaves your phone

You just got here

The first few days feel like a different planet

Take a breath. You don't have to understand all of it today.

Right now there is a lot of noise, a lot of machines, and probably a lot of fear you're trying not to show. That's normal. Every dad who has walked onto this ward has felt some version of it.

The beeping is not an alarm going off. It's the team keeping the closest possible eye on your baby, every second.

You might feel numb. You might feel useless. You might be holding it together for your partner and quietly falling apart on the drive home. All of that is allowed. None of it means you're doing this wrong.

A few things nobody tells you on day one:

  • You are a parent here, not a visitor. You're allowed to ask questions, ask again, and ask them to slow down.
  • Progress on this ward is rarely a straight line. A step back is not a failure, it's often just Tuesday.
  • Write things down. You will not remember the numbers, the names, or what was said on the round. The Notebook tab is for exactly this.
  • Look after the basics: eat something, drink water, sit down. You are no use running on empty.
Cotside is support and plain-English company, not medical advice. Your baby's team knows your baby. Anything that worries you, ask them, that's what they're there for.
